As soon as Spring arrives, people are looking for ideas, ways of transforming the outside into a mini vacation destination.  Everyone wants a place where they can escape the everyday worries and bask in the sun. Designing a patio to relax on during the spring and summer can be very rewarding. Not only having the pleasure of designing your outdoor paradise, but also seeing it come it life.

Where to begin

Designing your patio should begin with understanding what you want to use it for and what you would like it to look like. Do you like to entertain? Do you like lots of color? Do you want an outdoor grill? Wood decking or pavers?

Drawing a plan for your patio is important. This will help you to know the design and how many pavers you will need. Your patio plans should also include plants that you would like to see in your new outdoor area.  Also, if you plan to have a cooking area or built-in seating, that should all be included too.

Once you decide what you would like the new patio to look like, it is time to decide on materials. Visiting a local garden center will help you to see first-hand what options you have. Also, many local home improvement stores have “How To” clinics that will teach you how to install pavers for your new patio or even how to build a wood deck.

paversDifferent Options

You will find that there are many different options when it comes to patios. You can have a concrete patio, bricks or wood decking. Each have their pros and cons.

Wood decking is beautiful but can be high maintenance. Decking that has the sun beating down on it all summer along with rain, snow and wind the rest of the year will weather. Wood decks will need to be re-stained and sealed over time.

Concrete is another option for a patio. Concrete is strong however it can crack over time. Concrete is the most affordable choice.

Natural stone is great for outdoors. It is low maintenance, durable and a beautiful compliment to any home. The down side to natural stone is the upfront price. Natural stone can be very expensive.  However, if you are considering it, a great benefit is that it is low maintenance and holds its beauty.  It may be well worth the investment.

Extras

The patio is more than the surface. Creating paradise also includes plants, seating and lighting.  Creating an outdoor space means more them a picnic table. Create an outdoor living room with big, comfortable chairs, couches and tables. An outdoor fire will help bring it all together.

Bringing color into your new outdoor area is easy. Find your favorite plants, flowers, and herbs and plant them in beautiful pots. This will not only add a touch of color but will create a comfortable, relaxing area you and your guests will enjoy.
