A Guide to Buying a Patio Cover
Summer is a time to entertain and what a better way to do that then outside under the bright, beautiful sun. While we all enjoy the warmth of a summer day, trying to enjoy our meal while the rays of the sun shine down on our face, can be rather annoying. Add on top of that the sunburn we are sure to get and the ice in our drink melting faster then we can drink it, we now have a very uncomfortable evening.
The solution to this problem is a cover over the patio. This creates an area that is shaded from the heat and light but still allows guests to be out enjoying the weather.
Where to Begin
Every home patio from its shape to its size is different. Along with every homeowner who is going to have a varying opinion of what they need and want. Also, the laws concerning “what” can be built, is another factor.
Permit Office - The first place to start before adding anything onto your home is the local permit office. There you will find out all the information on what is allowed, what permits are needed, and what inspections may need to be done.
Next, what type of cover? Lattice is one option. This type of covering is great for those who want something that is simple and elegant that will still allow some light and air to pass though. This will give you minimal protection from rain or debris falling from trees.

Solid Structure - Another choice is a solid structure that is attached to the home. This type would not allow light in from above but it would be wonderful for those days when rain decides to interrupt your barbecue. It would also help to protect outdoor furniture.
Clear - Then there are clear patio panels that can be framed into a cover. The clear roof allows light in with protection from the rain.
Patio Umbrellas - The good old umbrella is another idea. Umbrellas are easy to move from place to place, adjust according to the sun’s angle and easy to store off season. However, they give you very limited protection and it is hard to fit a large sized party under one.
Sunroom - Sunrooms are completely enclosed with walls that are made of a clear material such as tempered glass framed into wood. This is a fabulous choice for the people who love viewing the outdoors year around and wish not to have to store their patio furniture every winter.
Materials
These vary as much as the types of patios. When choosing a building medium it will be very important to consider the climate of your area and how much maintenance are you willing to provide.
Wood is a beautiful, natural medium for any cover but wood needs a lot of care. Sanding and painting will need to be done every few years.
Aluminum and vinyl are good substitutes. Both are very durable, can have a wood like appearance and do not need the care that wood does.
