Is Solar Power Worth it?
Solar power may have many benefits but with costs ranging anywhere between a few thousand dollars to $50,000 or more it’s worthwhile reading up as much as you can on the subject.
Sunlight Levels - One serious consideration is the amount of sunlight you enjoy where you live. If you’re lucky to live somewhere sunny like Santa Fe where there is typically 325 days of sunshine per year then solar panels are great. If however you live somewhere like Seattle which experiences a pitiful 58 clear days per year then solar panels won’t be nearly as effective. You would therefore need more panels to be able to generate the same amount of energy. This of course increases the cost.
Size of Home - The size of your home will also have a big impact on how much you spend. If you have a small house then $5,00 - $16,000 can be enough for your needs. If you’re home is larger then you’ll need more panels to meet your energy usage. If the home remains connected to the utility company grid the cost is lower since some power is still coming from the grid. Having a battery storage system can easily double the cost.
Grants can Help with Costs - Luckily there are other factors which can help deal with the costs such as Federal grants. The reimbursement may come in the form of direct payment or lower property tax.
Some suppliers of solar panel systems may offer discounts at various times of the year. They’ll also offer a price matching system where they’ll match or beat any other quote. So shop around in the same way as you would shop around for the best deal on a TV or car.
Manufacturing has Improved - Luckily over time, the manufacturing process has improved which has lowered costs whilst increasing efficiency. There is a large choice of PV (photovoltaic) modules, charge controllers, batteries, inverters and other components to choose from now. Most work on the same principle as the others, but as with any product some businesses do a better job of manufacturing and marketing than others.
Oil Prices Continue to Rise - On the upside, the cost of electricity is likely to keep rising for the foreseeable future. Oil prices continue to rise, nuclear power is no longer seen as the answer along with other factors are pushing up prices.
Take all these factors in and you may find that solar panels provide you with the solution to your energy needs. If you decide to go ahead with it and have it installed properly you’ll probably be glad you make that decision. They will continue to provide you with electricity for many years, they are easy to maintain and help reduce your impact on the environment.
