The dictionary’s description of marble is a hard, crystalline metamorphic limestone. That in itself doesn’t sound beautiful. It sounds rather dull. However when you take a piece of this metamorphic limestone, polish and smooth it, you get a wonderful material that has been used for centuries.

History of Marble

The ancient Romans would use marble in their bathhouses. Walls, floors and ceilings were made with marble. Even the sculptures that adorned the ancient bathhouses were made of marble. Marble is not used as generously in our modern day homes as it was in ancient times. However, turning a bathroom into a small version of those ancient bathhouses can be easily done and affordable.

Marble has many benefits on top of being beautiful. The variety of colors that marble comes in is a great advantage to any homeowner. The different colors make it match any decor easily. Colors range from light and airy to deep and rich.

Also, like any hard flooring surface, marble is a good choice for people with allergies because it does not hold allergens. Then there is the “aw” effect. The guests that enter your home will be taken back by the beauty of your marble floors.

Anytime you change the flooring of your home to a natural material, the appeal and value of the home increase. Replacing a vinyl bathroom floor with marble will be well worth the time and money.

Cost of Marble Flooring

Anytime a homeowner is about to make changes to a home, the same questions are asked. Is this worth the money? Is it going to increase the value of the home?

In the case of installing marble, whether on the counter tops or floor, it will increase the value of your home. You will find that marble can be expensive with the price of the tiles alone ranging from $3-$10 or more. The good news is that they have found when money is spent in the kitchen and bathrooms of homes, that cost can be 100% recouped if the home is ever sold.

Care of Marble Flooring

With all of its beauty and history, marble is definitely one of the most magnificent flooring materials. With that, however, comes a great amount of care. Like other natural flooring materials, you want to stay away from using abrasive cleaners or scrub brushes. A damp rag will do the trick for wiping off the dirt. Be sure to remove any large pieces of debris that may scratch the surface.

Marble flooring will also need to be resealed. Depending on where the marble is located in the home, it may need to be re-sealed every year. This will help prolong the life of the floor. When your marble floor becomes dull, having it buffed will bring it back to life.
