Normally people think of the upright style when they think of buying a vacuum. It’s probably the most common type you can buy. There are actually a number of different vacuum cleaner types such as a central system, upright, handheld, broom, wet or dry and canister. Each type can be used for different purposes so no single type of vacuum can be considered the best.

Canister vacuums are ideal if you have a lot of wood or tiled flooring but not many rugs. It’s also great on upholstery and curtains. This means they are ideal for those with older homes who tend to have hardwood flooring rather than carpeting. It’s important to note that canister vacuums aren’t that great on carpets as the suction isn’t strong enough.
In saying that, there are still many reasons why a canister vacuum is the best choice for your home. If you have hardwood and rugs in your home but no or little carpeting then it’s ideal. The strength of suction on an upright vacuum can be too strong and may damage the fibers on your delicate or antique rugs. Many rugs have tassels which can become damaged by an upright vacuum. By using a canister vacuum you’ll be able to take better care of your rugs and make them last for future generations.

The same goes with drapes and upholstery. For new curtains you bought in home décor shop, these can withstand a lot more abuse. But with older and finer quality items, a canister vacuum is much better. They work well at removing dirt and hair but won’t suck so much as to do any unwanted damage.

Because you don’t normally use it as extensively throughout the home, a canister vacuum can last many years. These days upright vacuums tend not to have that long a life and need to be replaced often. The more expensive brands tend to last longer but not always. Vacuums are also becoming so cheap due to mass manufacture that most people simply go out and replace it once it breaks down. They can also be so expensive to repair, it works out cheaper to buy new. With canister vacuums however people tend to have it repaired.
If you’re unsure about what type of vacuum you need it’s a good idea to write a list of your requirements. What storage space do you have? Do want one that is light and easy to use? How much do you want to spend? What do you want to clean, carpets, wood or curtains? If you can answer these questions you should be able to decide what is best for you.

Having had a look at some of the canister vacuum reviews, you will see that the Hoover WindTunnel is low cost and efficient. However the drawback is that it’s heavy and could be very tiring to use. Plus it’s not great at picking up pet hairs. Miele Carina is lightweight and does a good job of sucking up dirt. Panasonic’s basic model is pretty cheap and does a good job. Dyson also have a very good one but it’s not cheap and not so good on delicate rugs.

I suggest you do as much reading as you can on the topic of canister vacuums so that you can decide for yourself. They are available in lots of locations including online. A lot of online sites offer reviews which previous buyers have submitted. Have a look at them.
